Kate Burns, LMFT
PSYCHOTHERAPIST • MARRIAGE & FAMILY THERAPIST
I am pleased to be able to offer my clients several means of conducting our sessions so as best to accommodate your needs and preferences — in-office, telephone and Skype.
Please read below to learn more about each option.
Many people still prefer to meet with a therapist the old fashioned way — in person. When you call me, I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Individual and Couples sessions are easily scheduled by telephone and are usually 45 minutes in length.
Family Therapy sessions are typically 90 minutes in length.
For all therapies, I invite you to look under the Counseling tab above to learn more about what each session might entail.
Clients who have used Telephone Sessions, either due to necessity or simply as preference, often tell me how useful they are and are pleased the option is available. Some, who initially were uncomfortable with the idea of Telephone Sessions, later remarked that it just took some time getting used to. For those whose only option is the telephone, you can imagine their saying how much it has been a godsend.
That said, I do prefer, whenever logistically and physically possible, that I meet with you in the office before we start Telephone Sessions (the same goes for Skype Sessions). I find that having one in-person session with a new client provides me, in a relatively short time, with a multi-dimenstional experience of them — a good start.
Clients, in a similar way, tell me they were able to get a better sense of me as a person than they would have had they not met me first; it made them feel more confident in my ability to help them.
Whether in person or by telephone, in our first conversation we will discuss what you would like help with, how you are feeling, how you are dealing with day-to-day life, what you think contributes to how you are feeling, and finally, what you hope to get from counseling.
I'll then discuss with you my initial impressions of your situation so you are sure that I fully understand what you have told me. I will ask you some questions to help me determine how or whether Telephone Sessions are likely to help you acheive your objectives.
More and more people use Skype to consult with therapists and with other professionals and many say they find it not only effective but, as you probably know, efficient and convenient.
You may find that Skype offers a more personal therapeutic experience than that of the telephone. For sighted people, Skype allows me to see you and you to see me, offering us both a fuller experience of the other. Additionally, some studies indicate that body language and facial expressions are as important as verbal communication.
For more information, please read the section pertaining to Telephone Sessions,
as the two are very similar.
If you haven't tried Skype before, it's not difficult and the instructions online are easy to follow. You can download a free version here.
